Hello fellow members of BCM313. It has been a pleasure to read all your introductory blogs and be introduced into some amazing skills that you all exhibit. This reading sent me into a state of serious self reflection about my own skillset and what I can offer and man, this was a can of worms that I really was not prepared to open.
A little about me, My name is Angus Andrews. I am in my 3rd year studying Communications and Media majoring in Marketing. I am a country boy at heart, the type who used to get excited by traffic lights as a kid because they were so foreign. I moved down to Wollongong not really knowing what to do with my life and 3 years later, still don’t really know. However, my time here has allowed me to find out who I really am and give me the ability to answer this question. My whole university education, building up to this introductory blog post.
To give a brief overview, I believe my greatest skills are my communication and people management. As a young kid, my parents always pushed me to get a job and earn my way through the world, to which I am very grateful. This early experience has allowed me to have opportunities to lead teams in workplaces and become supervisors and managers at various locations. The skills that I have acquired from these jobs have proved hugely valuable in my life and especially in my University life.
Being in leadership positions sharpens your critical thinking skills, allows you to tackle a problem creatively, gives you the skills to communicate with peers in the most effective way possible and opens an entire new avenue of thinking when approaching life in general.
It is very easy for me to say “I do not have a skill”, “I can’t think of one”. I am sure some of my peers encountered the same thought when doing this task. However I just needed to think what got me to where I am today.
